The Lazy Chef's Recipe Tip
Spring brings warmer weather and a busier schedule. This spring give yourself permission to be an occasional lazy chef.

There are many ways you can make yourself three hot meals a day without dirtying even one pot. All you need is a little ingenuity and a stark phobia of the kitchen sink.

For this month's tip - move over dishes - say hello to foil. There are a lot of recipes you can make using "tin foil packet cuisine".

Try this super easy and mess-free recipe:
  • Take a piece of your favorite fish (salmon, cod)
  • Place the fish in the center of a large sheet of foil and pull up the sides of the foil to make a bowl.
  • Add lemon juice, fresh dill, scallions, salt, pepper, and a splash of olive oil.
  • Seal up the foil.
  • Bake the packet at 350 degrees for 15-20 mins.
The result is perfectly steamed fish and no dishes to wash.

Want to take it one step lazier?
Use a scissors to cut your scallions, dill, or other favorite herbs over the fish. In the interest of hygiene, these should be a dedicated pair of scissors for food, not the ones you use for your hair or crafts.

Talk to Your Kids about
Good Food Choices

For some of us, learning about healthy food choices didn't really start until our metabolism started slowing down. It is never too soon to talk to your kids (nieces, nephews, grandkids, god-children) about food and point out why certain things are good food choices.

Try using a car analogy. Car
Food is fuel for your body. Like gas helps a car run, you need to eat good food in order for your bodies to run well. Eating a combination of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats will keep your engine going strong.

Carbohydrates - This includes bread, grain, fruit, and vegetables. Eating these foods is like filling up the car's gas tank.

Proteins - This includes lean meat, milk, and nuts. These foods are like the tools a car mechanic uses. They repair and build cells in your body.

Fats - This includes butter, oils, and eggs. These foods are reserve fuel. It is similar to keeping an extra gallon of gas in the garage for emergencies.

Fill your tank with the right stuff and there will be no stopping you!

Happy April!

Spring has sprung...well, kind of!

Officially it is spring but in reality we are still feeling the wintry mix of WI weather. So what's a fitness boot camp fanatic to do?

I know there are times when it is so cold and dreary outside that it takes everything just to get through the day without breaking down. This time of year gets many of us down; we get busy, we forget about our clean eating habits and we feel so overwhelmed and stressed. So find your one thing...that thing that brings you back to life.

For me, it is exercising outside and teaching outdoor boot camps! Boot camp goes beyond just trying to get you fit! It has a tendency and the ability to change how you look AND feel but most importantly it can change how you handle life!

It is time, make the comittment to yourself today and get your exercise spark back. I am here to help!

End Your Hibernation With the Spring Retreat

As you read in this month's blog entry, Not Enough Time, lack of time is the top excuse we use for not exercising. Yet when you really examine this excuse, it is not about time, but our priorities. You are the one that has to put yourself and your health first.

The Spring Retreat, this weekend April 3-5, is one way to do that. It is an opportunity to give yourself a chance to recharge and reenergize your fitness routine and mind set. It is time to stop hibernating and making excuses!

Today is the last day to sign up for this opportunity. The next retreat isn't scheduled until October, so don't miss out. More...

Outdoor Boot Camps Return with New Locations, New Times, and New Challenges

"If someone had told me ahead of time I would be going up and down St. Mary's Hill during boot camp, I might not have joined. Now I am so proud of myself and I can't believe I did that."

We hear comments like this all the time. At first apprehensive, boot campers of all fitness levels rise to the unique challenges that can only be offered at an outdoor boot camp. In fact, these challenges become bragging rights.

This outdoor season brings two new locations - Bay View's South Shore Park and Shorewood's Atwater Park and Beach. Since April kicks off the new outdoor season, it is a good time to check out the new locations and see what challenges are in store for us.

South Shore Park
Plenty of picnic tables, a long slow asphalt incline, trees and rocks make this an ideal boot camp location. Add in the sun rise and scenic views and you get a great workout and a bit of serenity. Bay View boot camps start April 13th with two available camp times, 5:30 am and 8:45 am.

Atwater Park
You can bet the beach monkey bars and long stair way will be an integral part at this new location. Referred to as the "mom's boot camp" because of the 8:45 am start time, this will be a summer favorite. Camp starts at this location on April 13.

Bradford Beach
Anyone who has attended a camp at Bradford Beach knows the struggle out of bed and hard work pays off when you are doing your final cool down and watching the sun rise.
Renew your love affair with Bradford Beach and the multiple outdoor challenges (hills, stairs, rocks, beach, and trails) on April 13th.

Klode Park
What better way to round out your day then with an hour of boot camp using this park's benches, incline, stairs, beach, soft track, and jungle gym. The view provides plenty of visual inspiration to push past your fitness barriers. This 6:00 pm boot camp starts on April 13.

Village Park
On April 6th, you can start your day right with camp at 5:30 am. Picnic tables, a jungle gym, the covered picnic area, and track will all be instrumental in helping you reach your fitness best at this location.

Going on Vacation?

You don't have to pay for camps you are going to miss. Instead, select the camp that equals the number of days that you are going to attend.

For example, you want to attend the April camp five days a week; however you will be gone for a week during Spring Break. You will be attending 15 out of the 20 days. Rather than signing up for the 5 day a week option (20 camp days), pick the 4 days a week option (15 camp days) and attend April's camp 5 days a week for 3 weeks.

Still confused, email us at support@milwaukeebootcamp.com and we can help you pick the best option for your schedule.

Outdoor Boot Camps Can Cure the Common Cold
Okay....maybe not cure the cold, but fresh air and regular exercise are two of the many factors that play a role in strengthening the immune system.
If you want a strong immune system you should make sure you are getting the following:
  • A balanced diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, provides the building blocks for healthy cells.
  • Deep breathing and fresh air replenish vital oxygen.
  • Regular exercise boosts oxygen intake and helps build cardiovascular and immune system health.
If you find yourself fighting the never-ending cold, then you might want to try the following techniques for boosting your immune system.

Hot and Cold Showers
Begin your morning with a warm shower. After a few minutes, step aside and change the temperature to lukewarm or cold. Place your right leg back in the shower first, then work your way up the body.

Stress Reduction
The culprit of so much - stress weakens your immunity. Relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation help you cope better with stress. A cup of linden-flower or valerian tea can help relieve anxiety and reinstate calm.

Herbal Immune Cocktail
Put 3 carrots, 1 orange, 1 apple, and half a beet through a juicer. Make a fresh batch of this drink every day.
