Bubble Gum

The next time someone gives you a dirty look for chewing gum, just smile at them and know that studies have shown chewing a sugar-free gum after eating neutralizes plaque acid and reduces your risk of getting cavities.

Your mouth isn't getting all the benefits - mastication does the whole body good by:
  • Suppressing hunger Chewing on gum can help you snack less.
  • Boosting memory
The chewing motion may increase blood flow to the brain.
  • Reducing stress
A recent survey found that more than 50 percent of participants believed chewing gum was an effective coping tool.
  • Burning calories
Chewing burns eleven calories an hour. So what? That is about eleven pounds a year.
  • Delivering nutrients
Cheeks are absorbent and gum authorities are starting to add vitamins and calcium to their sticks.

Greetings!

Do you recognize anyone in this picture?

Catherine on Vicki Cruise
That's right...here I am enjoying my five minutes of fame on the Real Housewives of Orange County! What the episode didn't show was the boot camp I coached. I guess sweating isn't as glamorous as a meet and greet.

Anyway..back to the real world.

Who of you are PERFECTLY CLEAN eaters?

Yes, I thought so - I am not either all the time.

But living a healthier lifestyle is not about being perfect, it is about making the best choices as much as possible but still enjoying yourself to "treat" foods every so often.

Eating healthy should not be just a fad or a phase in your life -- it should be an essential part of your lifestyle. And by eating well, you are helping your genes to express themselves in a positive, disease-fighting way.

For those of you who aren't "perfect" eaters, there's good news. If you switch to a healthy diet now, it can have a positive impact on your health down the road.

We here at MABC are your resource for a healthier life. Let us support your efforts to eating cleaner and exercising in ways that work for you. Keep this in mind while perusing this month's newsletter and my blog entry. We are always here to help!

-- Coach Catherine

P.S. If you are buying the wrong the food and want to get tips and tricks for picking out the right stuff...check out our next Grocery Shopping Tour scheduled for March 24th.

Boot Camp in Milwaukee

What I Learned at Boot Camp

At boot camp we learn how to do the proper plank hold and how to push ourselves to physically perform at levels we didn't think possible, but there are other life lessons that we are learning that are more subtle and less painful.

You Must Be a Priority
This lesson sounds so simple and yet everyone else tends to take priority over ourselves. When we give ourselves permission to have an hour to work on our physical health we are also putting ourselves first mentally. You can be a better parent, mate, friend, and role model if you live in a fit and healthy body. You never know who might take notice!

There Is Only One You
Don't compare your butt, muscle tone, or weight loss to anyone else's. Muscle, which guys have more of, is a natural fat burner. This can add to a faster weight loss for those with more muscles. Use this as an inspiration to add to your muscle tone.

Sweat Your Frown Upside Down
Next time your life pushes you to seek solace in the fridge, get moving instead. It doesn't matter where you go, what matters is steering your stress into exercise not food.

Health is Your 401K
Looking at your retirement account right now might be depressing. Instead, think of your health as one investment account that never depreciates.

Keep Your Fervor Afire
Expert coaching aside, you must find your own motivation. What is your catalyst to move every day?

Fat Busters That Work

Fat doesn't play fair. Thanks to advances in obesity science, there are new findings behind what makes us fat. This is the third and final article about our size and thighs, fatness and fitness.

A Virus Can Cause Obesity
Adenoviruses are responsible for a lot of illnesses and now appear to be linked to fat. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin injected chickens with the viruses and found certain strains fattened them up. We have flu shots, could an obesity vaccine be the next step?

Cookies Really Are Addictive
While food is not addictive the way cocaine or alcohol are - scientists in recent years have found some uncanny similarities.

Foods you like (cookies!!) release dopamine which is the hormone linked to motivation and pleasure. If obese people have fewer dopamine receptors, they may need more food to get that pleasurable reaction.

Ear Infections Can Taint Taste Buds
Ear infections can damage a taste nerve that runs through the middle ear. People who taste food less intensely than others seem more likely to be fat. New research suggests a tie between the two.

If you're an overweight adult who suffered a severe ear infection as a child, it may be worth paying attention to the taste and texture of your food. By finding healthier food substitutes (fruit instead of candy or olive oil instead of butter), you can drive toward eating better and weighing less.

Antioxidants Are Also Anti Fat
Free radicals are now blamed for both making you look old and making you fat. Zane Andrews, PhD, a neuroendocrinologist at Monash University in Australia, says these molecules damage the cells that tell us we are full. The best way to fight back is to avoid junk and load up on colorful, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.

Go For the Green Tea (Not Beer)

If you're not already in the green tea habit, make March your month to add this to your routine. Not just because of St. Patrick's day - but because of green tea's significant medicinal and therapeutic properties.

Did you know green tea...

Green TeaContains trace elements of fluoride which makes teeth more resistant to decay.

Green TeaIs known in China as a "fat-melter" because of its cholesterol lowering effects.

Green TeaIs loaded with polyphenols which may inhibit cancer cells and the development of tumors. Drink several cups a day in order to achieve this benefit.

Green TeaServed cold can increase your physical performance during exercise. In addition to being an ideal thirst quencher, it stimulates both mental and physical performance.

Green TeaContains caffeine. If you depend on coffee to make it through the day, know that green tea does contain caffeine (still less than coffee), so you won't go through withdrawal. If you have successfully kicked or avoided the caffeine habit (Good for You!), pouring water over the tea leaves prior to infusing will lower the caffeine content.
